Your training is fighting how memory works. Six things get past the brain's bouncer, and most security modules use none of them.
Your brain is not a sponge. But almost every training programme treats it like one: pour in the right information, in the right order, and it soaks up. Tidy. Predictable. Completely wrong.
It’s a bouncer. It stands at the door with a clipboard, ruthless and selective and frankly a bit emotional about it, deciding which moments get past the velvet rope and which get turned away. Knowledge doesn’t seep in. It has to earn admission.
Which is bad news for the average security module, because nothing about it is on the guest list. So the real question was never “what do we need people to know?” It’s “what does the brain actually let through?”
The research is surprisingly specific. Six things get past the bouncer: novelty, emotion, effort, pressure, identity and meaning. Here’s what each one does, and why the annual module trips over every single one.
Novelty: The Brain Loves Weird Stuff
When the brain meets something new, odd, slightly off-centre, it doesn’t observe politely like a museum visitor reading a placard. It reacts, instantly. Novel stimuli light up the hippocampus, which signals to the midbrain to allocate attention and prepare for action. In plain English, you have a built-in “ooh, what’s that?” circuit.
Walk into a room that hasn’t changed in ten years, same chairs, same slides, same presenter doing that slow corporate hum, and the brain powers down like a laptop on low battery. Open instead on a locked-down system, conflicting logs, and a slightly smug attacker leaving clues in plain sight, and it sits bolt upright like a guard dog hearing the gate creak. That jolt is the ignition. Your annual refresher, by definition, is the thing the brain has already seen.
Emotion: The Brain’s Highlighter Pen
Memory isn’t built on calm neutrality. It needs charge. Emotionally significant events release stress hormones that fire up a structure called the basolateral amygdala, which works like a priority stamp: this one’s worth keeping. Synapses strengthen. The memory gets filed somewhere sturdier than the usual mental junk drawer.
It’s why you can vividly recall the chaotic meeting three years ago when two colleagues had a blazing row, yet can’t remember a single thing from last week’s mandatory module.
Emotion, it turns out, is the brain’s highlighter pen.
If your training is emotionally flat, it is also functionally temporary.
Effort: The Brain Likes a Struggle
Here’s something no e-learning brochure will admit: ease is forgettable. Friction is where the memory gets built.
Productive difficulty strengthens recall. Real investigations don’t arrive neatly labelled and colour-coded. They arrive messy: weak log entries, conflicting timestamps, a locked file that won’t cooperate. To make sense of it you have to test ideas, argue with colleagues, double back. That mental effort isn’t a barrier to the learning. It is the learning. It works like lifting weights. The strain is the point.

Pressure: The Clock Changes Everything
Our ancestors didn’t get an hour to debate whether the rustling in the bushes was a rabbit or a tiger. Put a clock on a decision and the brain shifts gears: decisive, resourceful, clutter cleared, attention narrowed onto what matters.
It isn’t panic. It’s activation. The difference between browsing in a bookshop and sprinting for a train leaving in thirty seconds. Pressure also reveals something slides never can: how people actually behave when the lights go red. That’s where the honest insights live, and it’s exactly the condition a calm annual module removes on purpose.
Identity: Give Someone a Role
People don’t learn well as spectators. Give someone a role, investigator, infiltrator, crisis manager, and something shifts. Decisions feel personal. Consequences feel immediate. They’re no longer watching a scenario about security. They’re inside one.
It’s the difference between watching a detective drama and having someone hand you the case file and say, “right, your problem now.” Emotional engagement rises, cognitive investment deepens, and the lesson stops gathering dust in a slide deck.
Meaning: Relevance Over Abstraction
Facts rarely inspire action. Relevance does. Explain security through frameworks, control matrices and best-practice guidelines and the information might be perfectly accurate, but it lands somewhere between polite nodding and quiet daydreaming about lunch.
Meaning arrives the moment you show what actually happens. A rushed click after lunch. A password saved in a notes app. A link that looked legitimate enough. Then the dominoes: the intrusion, the spread, the data loss, the awkward executive calls. Suddenly it isn’t theoretical. It’s recognisable. And behaviour starts to shift, because people finally see what their ordinary decisions can set in motion.
Count How Many Your Training Uses
Novelty. Emotion. Effort. Pressure. Identity. Meaning.
Now look at your current programme and count how many of the six it actually uses. If the answer is none, that isn’t a content problem you can fix with better slides. It’s a design problem.
And the evidence is firmly on this side of the argument. A 2014 meta-analysis of 225 studies found active learning consistently and significantly outperforms passive instruction. The brain doesn’t store information. It stores experience.
Combine all six and you don’t get polite awareness or surface familiarity. You get change. You don’t just deliver knowledge, you alter instinct. And instinct is what people fall back on when the stakes are real and the seconds are ticking.
